DESCRIPTION
Buspirone is a unique anti-anxiety medication known as an azapirone. Unlike the benzodiazepines, buspirone is not addictive. It also seems to have less pronounced side effects than benzodiazepines and no withdrawal effects, even when the drug is discontinued abruptly. BuSpar is typically used for managing of anxiety disorders and for short-term relief of the symptoms of anxiety. The effectiveness of buspirone for long-term use (longer than 3–4 weeks) has not been established by controlled studies, but it has been used in some patients for substantially longer periods (6–12 months) with continuing good results. If it is used for extended periods, the need for continued therapy should be reassessed periodically.
BuSpar has only a modest effect on premenstrual syndrome (PMS). One study at Institute of Clinical Neuroscience in Sweden reported that buspirone reduced premenstrual irritability. It has a lower incidence of adverse sexual side effects than some other drugs, such as often reported with selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). In patients experiencing sexual dysfunction with other treatments, buspirone may be a useful alternative.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
Researchers at the Benjamin Rush Center in Syracuse, New York examined the role of buspirone in the management of alcohol withdrawal. They evaluated the efficacy of buspirone as treatment to eliminate or reduce the complications of alcohol withdrawal during the detoxification process. One hundred patients were considered for the study, which consisted of BuSpar every four hours. All but one patient given buspirone completed the treatment within six days in a manner that effectively controlled their withdrawal symptoms. Hospital staff and patients alike offered favorable comments regarding treatment effects. Staff noted that patients were more alert and were able to participate in support group meetings; patients remarked that they did not feel lethargic or addicted to buspirone. Researchers concluded that buspirone was effective in managing withdrawal symptoms in 100 hospitalized alcohol-dependent patients; yet, larger studies are needed to fully examine the advantages and disadvantages to treatment.
