The effect of sibutramine was studied in 20 patients with binge eating disorder who were given the drug or placebo for 12 weeks. Researchers found that binge frequency was significantly lower on Meridia than on placebo. In addition, sibutramine was effective in promoting and maintaining weight loss in these patients. In a similar study conducted in Brazil, 60 obese outpatients received sibutramine or placebo for 12 weeks. The researchers noted a significant reduction in the number of days with binge eating episodes in the sibutramine group compared with the placebo group. Meridia was also associated with weight loss and a decrease in depressive symptoms.

Headache, back pain, flu syndrome, abdominal pain, increased heart rate, migraine, anorexia, constipation, increased appetite, nausea, stomach upset, joint aches, dry mouth, insomnia, nervousness, anxiety, depression, runny nose, sore throat, sinusitis, increased cough, rash, painful menstruation.
CAUTIONS
- Use is not recommended during or within two weeks of MAO inhibitors. Should not be used concurrently with other centrally-acting appetite suppressants or drugs which increase serotonin levels (such as some antidepressants, etc.).
- Inform your doctor if you have currently or a history of drug abuse or dependence, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, uncontrolled or poorly controlled high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, irregular heart beats, and stroke.
- Inform your doctor if you have impaired kidney or liver function, bleeding tendencies or taking drugs which affect bleeding, seizure disorders, or narrow angle glaucoma.
- Initial and regular monitoring of blood pressure and pulse are needed to detect substantial increases in blood pressure.
- Serious, potentially fatal toxicities may occur when thyroid hormones (at dosages above usual daily hormonal requirements) are used in combination with sympathomimetic amines to induce weight loss.
Hypersensitivity, hypothyroidism, anorexia nervosa, severe hepatic / renal disease, uncontrolled hypertension, history of CAD, CHF, dysrhythmias, lactation, CVA.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Serotonergic drugs, drugs that raise blood pressure, tricyclic antidepressants, ketoconazole. This drug is metabolized by a specific set of liver enzymes (cytochrome P450 enzymes 3A4). Several other drugs interfere with these liver enzymes, and thus may increase or decrease the clearance of sibutramine from the body, potentially increasing the risk of side effects or decreasing effectiveness. When these drugs are given in combination with sibutramine, dosage adjustments may be needed.
